Creating In-Scene User Placement Photos

Note: The features explained in this article are available in RightBooth version 7.17.6 or later.
This article explains how to create the kind of event workflow that is shown in this example video:

The following video tutorial shows how to create background and foreground image pairs that are suitable for generating In-scene user placement photos...

How to create an In-Scene User Placement event
  • Go to the RightBooth Camera settings and set your camera  to capture photos at the size 1280 x 720 pixels.  This is required because the scene images you will be using are also this size.  Here we are taking photos with a webcam, set at 1280 x 720 pixels:
Picture
You can choose to capture photos at a larger size than 1280 x 720 pixels, but you must make sure that your final photo has the same aspect ratio.  For example, in the following screenshot we are using a DSLR camera that has been set to take photos at Quality S2, which is 1920 x 1280 pixels.  So in order to get the photo to be the same aspect ratio as the front and back images (1280x720), we use the Crop setting to crop the photo down to 1920 x 1080 pixels:

  • Now use the RightBooth Event Wizard to create a standard photo capture event, choose to take 3 photos and include the 'Get ready' and 'Countdown' event screens.
You now need to edit this event as follows:

  • In Event designer --> Event structure --> Photo AI --> Background AI, choose 'Yes, automatically':
Picture
  • In the Screen editor, go to the 'Get ready' screen. You will use the 'Get ready' screen to allow the user to choose a scene image.
  • Remove the 'Get ready' label item.
  • In the screen properties, increase the screen timeout value to 30 seconds (for example).
  • Also, tick the 'Next' option to add the Next button and label to the screen:

  • On the 'Add items' toolbox, add the 'AI backgrounds' item to the screen.  This is a special image grid for containing scene image backgrounds.  Edit the grid contents and choose some scene images from the Media library folder: Backgrounds --> Front and Back.

The Front and Back folder contains pairs of matching images, a foreground image and a background image, that together make a scene image.  Make sure you choose background images for the grid.  Here we have chosen 4 background images...
Picture
  • On the 'Get ready screen, add an image item.
  • On the Image properties toolbox, set the image contents to 'Background image AI'.  This will cause the image item to show the chosen image from the AI backgrounds grid, each time the grid image is selected.
  • Also, set the image Opacity value to 0.5.  The reason for this will be explained later:
Picture
  • On the 'Get ready' screen, add a second image item.
  • On the Image properties toolbox, set the image contents to 'Front image AI'.  This will cause the image item to show the matching front image each time an image is chosen from the AI backgrounds grid:
Picture
You now have a camera item and two image items on the Get ready screen.
  • Place all three items on top of each other, at the same position and same size on the screen.  The stacking order is camera item -> background image item -> front image item.
Here you can see the 3 items are at X=340, Y=170, W=650, H = 416.  You can also see the webcam camera item is showing through the background image, this happens because of the image Opacity property is set to 0.5.
Note that in this example screenshot, the webcam has deliberately not been connected, in order to allow you to see the  Opacity effect:
Picture
  • Now add the same two image items onto the 'Countdown' and 'Take photo' screens, ensuring that they are again placed over the camera item on both screens, in exactly the same way as previously explained.

  • Go to the 'Show photo' screen.
  • Add an image item.
  • On the Image properties toolbox, set the image contents to 'Front image AI' and tick the 'Stamp' property.
  • Move and size the image item so that it is positioned exactly over the photo placeholder:
Picture
By setting the Stamp property on the front image, this will cause the image to be merged onto the finished photo after you choose to Keep it.

Job Done !

That completes the editing.
Now save the event, play it and enjoy !
