Reducing The Wait Time In A Recording Event

24/4/2022

I was recently asked if it is possible to reduce the amount of time it takes for a recording event to process video files, which in turn allows you to have a greater throughput of users at the recording station.
This question seems particularly important when recording videos and then applying video enhancements, prior to showing them on a sharing station.

Let's consider recording videos using a wireless GoPro.  This is a typical workflow:

One way to reduce this time is to use another instance of RightBooth on the same computer as the recording event to play an intermediary Watch folder event that does the following:
  1. performs your required video enhancements and
  2. copies the enhanced video to the Sharing Station event

Then you can remove the video enhancements from your recording event and set it to simply copy the GoPro videos to the watch folder event.  Here is the new setup, using 2 instances of RightBooth:

Note:  The file copying steps can be performed automatically by the 2 events:
  • the recording event can automatically copy the transferred videos to the watch folder and
  • the watch folder event can automatically copy the enhanced videos to the sharing station folder
This can be achieved by adding the appropriate RightBooth File Copy actions into both events.  File Copy actions can be found in RightBooth Event Designer --> Event files/folders

  • Add the 'Show in live camera feed' option in Green screen settings
  • Add the option to use the www.remove.bg service in the photo event workflow.  This provides automatic AI photo background removal
  • Add the text variable {CANONBATTERY} to provide the option of showing the Canon battery percentage in a label item on any event screen
  • Improvements made to the GoPro file monitoring and transfer process.  Note. Please make sure you run with Camera Tools for Heros version 1.3.2 or newer.   https://toolsforgopro.com/dl/herocameratoolswin.exe
  • Add the setting 'Use GoPro WiFi periodically' to reduce the chance of the GoPro WiFi being deactivated after a period of no use
  • The app now remembers and returns to the most recently visited folders when applying various video enhancements
  • Fix: Prevent crash when converting videos to MP4 with certain post processing effect combinations
  • Fix: Prevent crash when trying to annotate on the live camera feed when the camera is not initialised
  • Fix: QR codes generated for videos and photos in recording events now also generate and reference the associated HTML download wrapper files

RightBooth Version 7.7.20
  • Improvements made to the GoPro control interface:
    • Optional WiFi connection at startup
    • Improved the optional watchdog to help keep the GoPro WiFi connected
    • Selectable video and photo submodes in GoPro settings
    • Improved file transfer monitoring
  • Add the Start/Stop Performance setting: 'Hardware rendering when using extended desktop'.  Turning this off will fix the problem of mp4 videos freezing when played on event screens shown on extended desktop monitors
  • The app now continues working in Evaluation mode while the timout nag screen is showing
  • The Sharing Station event now creates a copy of any video or photo that is chosen for QR code scanning. This removes the potential for RightBooth freezing due to simultaneous file accesses by multiple devices
  • Save all HTML files with UTF8 encoding (previously Unicode encoding)
  • Add warning about DSLR and GoPro photo aspect ratios
  • Stop resizing the live view image if the aspect ratio does not match the camera's photo and video aspect ratios
  • Fix: Reset the cached print layout image when switching between event files
  • Fix: Prevent file read locks on the Sharing Station
  • Fix: Stop the crash when using 'Fast mode' video enhancement in certain combinations
  • Fix: Allow the 'Stop sooner' video label item to be edited on the 'Record video' screen and to prevent it from being removed from the screen
  • Fix: PNG thumbnails now appear in the Media Library viewer panel
  • Fix: The Spacebar now works on the on-screen keyboard
  • Fix: Videos emailed from the Sharing Station are now the ones chosen by the users
  • Fix: 'Send files to phone' now works if 'Send files by email' is not included in the event
  • Fix: Reset any previous mobile service provider details prior to loading RightBooth settings
  • Fix: FTP file uploads for images and videos now include uploading the associated HTML web page for QR code file downloading
